Chapter Nineteen

We set up a tiny camera in our doorway aimed towards room 1925. When we arrived, we listened at the door and found the room empty. I could scent River in the hallway along with her two captors. We decided to set up surveillance and wait for them to return to their room before confronting them. A couple hours later we watched them return. Although they touched River on the arm and the back, she did not lean into their touch, welcoming it. She seemed serious and pensive, as if she were focused on a single goal. How much had they told her about her supposed role in their mission? The fact that they were exposing her to such danger, the Reaper Syndicate of all things, infuriated me. River was kindness and light. She had already been through so much pain and humiliation. She deserved a comfortable life of safety where she could commune with wild animals, laugh and love. We’d be the ones to give her that life.

I checked my weapons, I had my knives strapped to my body in a familiar way that calmed me. I had my gun holstered at the small of my back. We entered their suite silently. They had the balcony doors opened and the wind that blew through the gauzy drapes hid our scent.

“You know, I really should spank your ass for wandering off like that,” said Landor.

“No one touches her ass, but us,” I said.

River jumped to her feet at the sound of my voice, the cards spilling from her fingertips as she spun around. She looked at us with a mixture of joy and surprise then tears made her eyes glassy and bright. I never wanted to see tears in her eyes again, not from pain or sadness. Not if I could prevent it. I jerked the arm that was blocked from view by Aeren’s back and my blade slipped free into my waiting right hand. As the ghost agents stood to face us, River ran towards us and launched herself at Aeren.

He easily caught her, taking a step back from the impact and she managed to get an arm hooked around my neck, pulling me close to her. The ghost agents exchanged a look then sat back down. Aeren crushed her to him and she wrapped her legs around his waist. I inhaled her scent and stroked her hair. I could feel my cock lengthening and thickening in my pants.

“You came for me,” she sobbed.

I caressed her face. “Of course we did. I told you, River. You are mine, mine and Aeren’s. We will always come for you.” I laid a gentle kiss on her lips and wiped the tear from the corner of her eye.

“Please put your knives away and hear them out. I don’t want anyone fighting in front of me,” she said.

I looked over at Landor and Carnick. They were sitting still at the table, their hands visible on the tabletop showing no weapons. I slipped the knife back into my sleeve holster and showed them my hands.
